Quick Answer
Ballroom by Amy teaches private wedding first dance lessons across the Twin Cities. Choose the Classic First Dance ($499, four private lessons, a classic wedding dance) or the Signature First Dance ($599, four private lessons, custom choreography to your song). Add a bonus dance lesson ($99) or a personalized first dance video ($399), or get the custom dance, bonus lesson and video together for $999. No dance experience is needed.
Made for Couples Who Have Never Taken a Lesson
You don’t need to be dancers to have a beautiful first dance. Amy starts with how the two of you already move, then builds a dance that fits your song, your comfort level and your wedding. If one of you is nervous, that’s normal. If one of you already loves to dance, Amy will build in a few moments to show it off.
Worried it will be stressful? It’s the opposite. Lessons with Amy are relaxed, encouraging and full of laughs, a fun break from all the wedding planning.
Feel prepared
Know exactly what happens from the moment your names are announced to your final pose.
Enjoy the moment
Stop counting steps in your head and actually look at each other.
Make it yours
Your song, your style and your personalities, not a routine borrowed from someone else’s wedding.
Learn it together
A few evenings of laughing, practicing and doing something new as a couple, right in the middle of all the planning.
Two Ways to Prepare for Your First Dance
Both packages are four private lessons with Amy. The difference is how much of the dance is built just for you.

What Happens in Your Four Lessons
- Foundation. Amy listens to your song, asks how you want the moment to feel, and teaches the basics of moving together: posture, connection and timing.
- Main patterns. You learn the heart of your dance, built so it’s easy to repeat and easy to remember.
- Special moments. Your entrance, a turn, a dip or a pose where it fits, and an ending that feels finished.
- Polish. You run the full dance, smooth the transitions and practice it the way it will happen at your reception.
Lessons are scheduled on your calendar. You and Amy work out times that fit your life, whether the wedding is a year away or coming up fast.
Planning Your First Dance
When to start
Ideally several weeks to a few months before the wedding. Shorter timelines still work. Amy simply keeps the dance more focused.
Choosing your song
Pick a song you both love hearing. Most first dances run about 90 seconds to two minutes, so many couples dance to a shortened version.
What to wear
Comfortable clothes and shoes at first. Once the dance feels familiar, practice in shoes like your wedding shoes, and tell Amy about a train, bustle or fitted suit so the dance works with what you’ll wear.
Why Couples Learn With Amy
Amy Hanson is the three-time defending Dancer’s Cup Tour Top Teacher. She has danced professionally and internationally and built friendships with dancers many people recognize from Dancing with the Stars. She has taught since 2009 and founded Ballroom by Amy in 2013.
What couples notice most is how it feels in the room. Amy is patient, practical and happiest teaching people who have never danced before. Her goal is for you to look comfortable and feel like yourselves, not to turn your wedding into a competition.
Ballroom by Amy is based in the Twin Cities, teaching in Saint Paul, Roseville, Shoreview and Plymouth, and welcoming couples from across the metro.
Wedding Dance Lesson FAQs
Do we need any dance experience?
No. Wedding lessons are built for couples starting from zero. Amy teaches the basics first and shapes the dance around what feels natural for you.
What’s the difference between the Classic and Signature First Dance?
Both are four private lessons. The Classic First Dance ($499) teaches a classic wedding dance. The Signature First Dance ($599) is custom choreography set to your song.
How far ahead should we start lessons?
Several weeks to a few months before the wedding is ideal, and lessons are scheduled around your calendar. If your date is close, reach out anyway. A shorter timeline just means a more focused dance.
Can our dance be in any style?
Yes. With the Signature First Dance, Amy can choreograph your first dance in any style: ballroom favorites like waltz, rumba and foxtrot, or something outside the ballroom world, like country, line dancing or hip hop.
Where are lessons held?
Amy teaches in Saint Paul, Roseville, Shoreview and Plymouth and welcomes couples from across the Twin Cities. She’ll confirm the location when you reach out.
Can Amy help with a parent dance or another special dance?
Yes. The $99 bonus dance lesson can go toward a father-daughter dance, a mother-daughter dance or a dance for any two people who matter to your day. You can also use it for extra first dance practice.
What is the personalized first dance video?
For $399, you get a video showing moments from your practice, with the two of you sharing why you chose your song and the story behind it. It’s made to be played at your reception right before your first dance, and it’s included in the $999 Complete First Dance Bundle.
