Quick Answer
Ballroom by Amy offers three kinds of group dance classes in the Twin Cities: community group classes, usually through community education; formation teams that practice weekly and perform at a professional and Pro-Am competition; and private group classes for church groups, bachelorette and birthday parties, senior groups and more. Prices vary by class and group.
Three Ways to Dance in a Group
Group classes are the easiest way to start dancing. You learn alongside other people, nobody is watching just you, and there is always someone laughing at the same mistake you just made.
Community Group Classes
Start With the Basics
Relaxed classes offered through community education programs. A low-pressure way to learn the basics, meet new people and find out how much fun ballroom can be.
Formation Teams
Perform as a Team
Meet weekly for a season, learn one routine as a team, and perform it at a professional and Pro-Am competition. Space is limited.
Private Group Classes
Just for Your Group
Bring your church group, bachelorette party, birthday crowd, senior group or friends, and Amy will plan a class around who you are and what you want to dance.
Formation Teams: Teamwork, Costumes and a Big Finish
A formation team is a group of dancers who learn one routine and perform it in unison. Teams meet weekly for a set period, building toward a performance at a professional and Pro-Am competition.
Teams usually pick a theme and dress the part, which is half the fun. Along the way you build real friendships, because nothing brings people together like learning the same steps and cheering each other on.
- Join the team. Reach out to Amy to hear when the next season starts.
- Practice weekly. Amy teaches the routine step by step, one section at a time.
- Pick a theme. Costumes and music give the routine its personality.
- Take the floor. Perform together at a professional and Pro-Am competition.
Ballroom by Amy has a ladies formation team (guys welcome) and a senior formation team. Space is limited, so ask early.
Book a Class for Your Group
Looking for something different to do together? A private group class gives your group a fun, shared experience, and nobody needs to know how to dance beforehand. Amy plans the class around your group’s ages, energy and the kind of dancing you want to try.
Great for:
Tell Amy what kind of group you have, roughly how many people, a few dates that work and any location ideas. She’ll take it from there.
Upcoming Classes and Team Seasons
Current group classes are listed under Local Events on the homepage. Don’t see one that fits? Reach out to Amy. She can tell you what’s coming up next, including when the next formation team season starts.
Prices vary by class type, group size and length, so Amy will give you the details for the option you choose.
Why Learn With Amy
Amy Hanson is the three-time defending Dancer’s Cup Tour Top Teacher. She has danced professionally and internationally and built friendships with dancers many people recognize from Dancing with the Stars. She has taught since 2009 and founded Ballroom by Amy in 2013.
In a group class, that experience shows up as patience and clear teaching. Amy breaks every step into pieces anyone can follow, keeps the energy up, and makes sure the whole room is having a good time.
Ballroom by Amy is based in the Twin Cities, teaching in Saint Paul, Roseville, Shoreview and Plymouth, and welcoming dancers from across the metro.
Group Class FAQs
Do I need a partner?
No. You can come on your own or with friends. A partner is never required.
Do I need any dance experience?
Not for community classes or private group classes. They start with the basics. Formation teams learn one routine step by step, so ask Amy whether the current team is a good fit for you.
How much do group classes cost?
Prices vary by class type, group size and length. Community class prices are listed with each class, and Amy will quote private group classes and formation team seasons directly.
Who joins formation teams?
Adults who want a fun goal, a weekly routine and a team to share it with. Many team members are in their 50s, 60s and 70s, and Ballroom by Amy has both a ladies team (guys welcome) and a senior team.
What kinds of groups can book a private class?
Almost any group that wants to have fun together: church groups, bachelorette and birthday parties, senior groups, wedding parties, family reunions, holiday parties, coworkers and clubs.
What should I wear?
Comfortable clothes you can move in and shoes that slide a little and stay on your feet. Skip grippy sneakers and flip-flops.
How do I find out what’s coming up?
